Pontus Tidemand no. 1 driver in team EKS RX
23 year old Swedish rally talent Pontus Tidemand is chosen to be the number one driver in Mattias Ekström’s own rallycross team EKS RX. The team’s goal is to participate in as many events as possible in the FIA World Rallycross Championship during the year and eventually become the best rallycross team.
“I’m really excited to get the opportunity to drive rallycross for EKS” says Pontus. “Rallycross is a worldwide growing sport and it’s motivating to be a part of a team that aims to win. It’s also a great addition to my rally career.”
Mattias Ekström grew up in a rallycross depot and has competed all over the world in different cars over the last 20 years. But rallycross has always been close to his heart and now he’s going back to his roots by starting his own team. The goal is to one day become the best rallycross team out there and during 2014, the team aims towards driving as many rounds as possible in the World Championship.
“This year will be a test year for the team” explains Mattias Ekström. “Our ambition is to form the car, driver and team into a unit that really works. We will offer entertainment as well as results for partners, fans and spectators. We have chosen Pontus as our number one driver and he is one of the most promising young rally drivers. We are fully confident that he will deliver.”
The project car that is being built is an Audi that goes under the name of Audi S1 EKS RX Concept.
“We’re developing the car all on our own, with support from many skilled co-workers and partners from all over Europe. Our aim is obviously to build the best car. If we succeed or not will show very soon” says a smiling Mattias Ekström.
The team will also run a second car with interesting guest drivers during the season. Who those drivers are, more details about the team and the calendar will be revealed next month.
