Pontus Tidemand reached the first milestone towards victory in this weekend’s round of FIA World Rallycross Championship in Sweden. After four strong heats, he qualified for semi finals in EKS’ Audi S1. In front of nearly 35 000 spectators, he gave the Höljes circuit maximum attack.
“We have had fantastic days in Höljes” says Pontus. “The crowd was amazing and I enjoyed every second of it. Besides that we have not yet had a perfect start with my car, everything worked great on the track. I was able to join the fight and I had so much fun.”
The speed on the track proved to be Pontus’ biggest strength. With a starting field of 38 Supercars, he set three top six times, including one race win, in the qualifying heats. Thanks to that he landed in seventh place overall and gained a spot in the semi finals. He quickly reloaded and the semi finals began very promising, but trouble along the road made him lose his ticket to the finals.
“I really wanted to succeed and came a little too fast into a corner and had a spin. If I had not made that mistake, I might have had a shot at making it to the finals.”
Mattias Ekström had an even better weekend. He took the win in the Supercar category and the result triggers Pontus to continue challenge the rallycross elite.
“Mattias did everything right this weekend. It inspires me definitely to try to be the one who takes the next win for EKS and it feels nice to have confirmed what we already knew – that the car has huge potential that combined with a skilled driver is a winning concept.”
Luckily Pontus does not have to wait long for his next chance in the FIA World Rallycross Championship. Already this upcoming weekend, the series sixth round takes place at Circuit Jules Tacheny in Mettet in Belgium.
