After making a strong super-rally on the Friday before the premiere of Global Rallycross on Saturday so showed Pontus once again that he is to be reckoned with in this kind of competitions and was able to qualify as third in the A-final in the first Global Rallycross in the United States.
After Friday’s strong fourth place in the superrally contest it was time for a new contest on Saturday. Now ordinary rallycross with qualifying heats and finals.
Pontus began Saturday by setting the fourth best time on a time-qualifying with his Ford Fiesta.
In the first qualifying heat was Pontus second after the double world champion in rally Marcus Grönholm , which also drove a Ford Fiesta with multiple British champion Marcus Dodd in third place. The time was enough for third place in the first round for Pontus.
– I thought the race was going well and it seemed like a good start to the race for me, says Pontus
In the second qualifying heat, fought Pontus for victory, but after a few laps so break the front differential and Pontus retire, although Gronholm had problems in this race and retire, but after a strong job in the team did both came to the start of the third round. Fastest in the second round was Micke Jernberg.
Now Pontus need to put a really good time in qualifying heat number three when you include two of the three rounds and it went really really fast in this heat for Pontus. Pontus had second time in total, only 0.1 seconds behind Gronholm and Pontus got the third lane in the A-final.
– Now everything worked well and i look forward to running A-final, but it will be really hard when Grönholm has the pole position and Tanner Foust second lane, “says Pontus
The first A-final of the Global Rallycross would be tough and when the five cars were released off, so did not Pontus a good start but still managed to keep his third place and took the jokerlap on the first lap. Jokerlap was a bit different from what we are used to seeing in Europe where there was a jump that had a gap of 70 inches, where the other cars in the race ran under the flying cars. Pontus was quickly behind the first three cars again and appeared to approach a podium place when none of the others had drove the jokerlap. When the car suddenly stopped running a podium was replaced with retire a A-final.
– Something in the transmission was broken, really sad but that is racing. Has been a wonderful weekend where I had many who have noticed me. Do not know how many people have come and congratulated me for my nice driving and “awesome man” is a word I heard all weekend from everything from children to the Ford Racing executives and broadcasters, “says Pontus with a laugh.
Now Pontus wants to run one more race in the U.S. before they hopefully they are on the starting line of the X-Games in late summer. One thing is for sure and that is that Americans have noticed the tall, blond and Swedish talent Pontus Tidemand.
